Too big, too small, too round. Women have had a love-hate relationship with their breasts. As part of their Pretty Hurts series, New York Magazine asked women of all ages in the New York city to draw their breasts and the feelings associated with them. Psychologists Rachel Millsted and Hannah Frith have found that “Breasts are seen simultaneously as a marker of womanhood, as a visual signifier of female sexualization, as synonymous with femininity, and as essential for the nurturance of infants. It is not surprising then that women experience their breasts in confusing and contradictory ways.”
